The Arabic Alphabet

Letter Forms

28 letters in standard Arabic

Characteristics:

Comparison

Comparative forms:

  • أفعل (af'al) - most common pattern

Superlative:

  • Uses definite article: الأحمر (the reddest)

Verbs

Tense and Aspect

Three main tenses:

  1. Past (الماضي)

    • Perfect action
    • Regular 3-letter pattern: فَعَلَ (fa'ala)
  2. Present (المضارع)

    • Ongoing or habitual
    • Prefixes indicate person
    • Can indicate future (with سوف)
  3. Future (المستقبل)

    • Using سوف (sawfa) prefix
    • Or context

Verb Conjugation

Perfect tense - regular verb (فَعَلَ):

Irregular Verbs

Weak verbs (نِ، و، ى):

  • Common: كان، رأى، عطى

Prepositions

Simple Prepositions

في - in, at على - on, over, concerning من - from إلى - to, toward عن - about, regarding مع - with بدون - without ل - for, to (attached to following word)

Prepositional Phrases

Affect noun case:

  • Most put noun in genitive case
  • Change meaning based on context

Articles

The Definite Article (ال)

Attached to front of noun

  • يُعرّف الاسم (defines the noun)
  • أل شمسية (sun letter) - doubles next consonant

Indefinite

No article in Arabic - context determines
